About the LLRWMO
Facilities
The LLRWMO manages LLRW at several large and numerous small historic waste sites
located throughout Canada, including locations in Ontario, Alberta and the
Northwest Territories. Material with no alternative management or disposal
option is transported to the LLRWMO storage buildings at AECL’s Chalk River Laboratories
(CRL). Larger volumes are often managed at
or near their sites of origin. At some of the historic waste sites, materials
have been placed in interim storage pending the development and implementation
of long-term management solutions. The LLRWMO conducts ongoing monitoring,
inspection and maintenance at these interim storage sites. The historic waste at
these sites includes contaminated soil, building materials
and other contaminated items.

The Pine Street North Extension Temporary Storage Site (TSS) and a portion of its associated support building in Port Hope, Ontario, is licensed by the
Canadian Nuclear
Safety Commission (CNSC). The TSS receives contaminated soils regularly from the Construction Monitoring Program. |

The Sewage Treatment Plant Temporary Storage Site in Port Hope is licensed by the CNSC. It is closed and is now being maintained and monitored.

The Strachan Street Consolidation Site in Port Hope is licensed by the CNSC. It is closed and is now being maintained and monitored.

The Passmore Avenue Temporary Storage Site, located in Scarborough, Ontario, contains mildly contaminated soils. It is closed and is now being maintained and monitored.

The storage cell located at the Beaconhill Landfill in Fort McMurray, Alberta, contains mildly contaminated soils from several cleanups in the area. It is closed and is now being maintained and monitored.

The inside of one of two LLRWMO storage facilities operated by AECL at its Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario. The storage facilities regularly receive contaminated
materials from the LLRWMO's ongoing cleanup and remediation activities.

The LLRWMO's Office in Port Hope, Ontario, provides the LLRWMO with facilities in support of radiation and environmental monitoring.

The LLRWMO also monitors and investigates other sites in Canada.
