For
Immediate Release
June 19,
2001, NORTHUMBERLAND, ON
Paul Macklin, Member of Parliament for Northumberland, was very pleased that
Minister of Natural Resources Ralph Goodale has signed a legal agreement to
invest $260 million in cleanup for the low-level radioactive waste in Port
Hope, Hope and Clarington. This more than a quarter of a billion dollar, ten
year project will create three long term storage facilities, one in each
municipality, and will include a $20 million cash transfer to Port Hope and
Hope.
“This agreement is vital to the future expansion and vitality of the Port
Hope and area economy. A culmination of years of hard work by many dedicated
individuals, we should all keep in mind all of the individuals who have
worked so hard over the last decades to make this announcement possible”,
Mr. Macklin stated. “In particular, I want to offer my thanks to my
predecessor, the Honourable Christine Stewart, who worked tirelessly to
develop this long-term low-level radioactive waste strategy.”
Mr. Macklin concluded, “This announcement marks the beginning of a new era
of prosperity for Port Hope and Hope, as they continue their excellent
efforts in creating a historical destination, and diversifying what is
already a strong industrial and high-tech base. $260 million is a massive
investment in any community, and I look forward to continuing to work with
the residents of Port Hope and Hope as the implementation of this strategy
progresses.”
