Port Hope Area Initiative

Answer #10

How will you protect residents during the cleanup?

There are proven practices used to protect workers and members of the public during waste excavation, transportation and placement in a long-term secure facility. Experience has shown that procedures such as routine radiation monitoring, strict waste handling procedures, dust suppression, covered trucks and controlled site access protect both people and the environment. Protection of the health and safety of residents and the environment is basic to the detailed environmental assessments (EAs) conducted for the Projects. In the Waste Excavation Management Plans for each site all pathways and action levels for potential hazards will be considered. There will be liaison with the Municipality and residents regarding these plans and the verification of work.
