Port Hope Area Initiative
History of the Port Hope
Area Initiative
How the Port Hope Area
Initiative began
The
Government of Canada, through Natural Resources Canada, has
committed $260 million to respond to community-recommended solutions for the
cleanup and
long-term safe
management of the historic low-level radioactive waste in the Port Hope area. In
March 2001, a legal agreement between the federal government and the
Municipalities of Clarington, Hope Township and the Town of Port Hopewas finalized which set out the responsibilities throughout the process.
The LLRWMO has been designated as proponent for two projects under the
Initiative: the Port Granby Long-Term Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management
Project and the Port Hope Long-Term Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management
Project. Each project is subject to an environmental assessment and licensing
phase expected to last about 5 years. Clean-up implementation and construction
of the proposed long-term waste management facilities will last about 5 to 7
years followed by long-term monitoring and surveillance.
