Background information

Environmental Assessments

One Initiative – Two Proposed Projects

The Port Hope Area Initiative is being carried out in three phases.  The first phase involves the environmental assessment and regulatory review of the two proposed projects. Subsequent phases involve cleaning up the wastes, developing new management facilities and placing the wastes, followed by a phase of long-term inspection, monitoring and maintenance.

Environmental assessments in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) will be conducted on:

  • The Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Office is the proponent for both projects.

  • The Responsible Authorities for both projects are: Natural Resources Canada (lead), Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
